Learn how sedentary work affects the body, what the first signs of musculoskeletal overload are, and when to seek a specialist. At the Physiatry and Rehabilitation Clinic at Polyclinic Púpava, we help patients with back pain, muscle stiffness, and poor posture.
Everyone deserves pain-free movement.
A sedentary way of working is now a common part of life for many people. Long hours spent at a computer, very little natural movement, and travelling mostly by car can gradually affect our health, often subtly but over the long term.
At the Physiatry and Rehabilitation Clinic at Polyclinic Púpava we meet patients who suffer from back pain, stiffness, or worsening posture precisely because of sedentary work. The good news is that these difficulties can largely be prevented.
How does prolonged sitting affect the body?
Muscles naturally strengthen through movement, but if they are not used for a long time, they gradually weaken. During a full day of sitting at a computer or long periods of watching television, some muscle groups remain under constant tension simply to keep the body in a seated position. This mainly involves the hip and knee flexors and the muscles responsible for keeping the spine upright. The upper body, gluteal muscles, and thigh muscles remain inactive for long periods. If this continues, the muscles gradually lose their natural function and coordination, as if forgetting how to work properly. The first warning signs often appear as dull lower back pain, neck stiffness, and a general feeling of reduced mobility and discomfort.
Long-term imbalance between muscle groups can lead to
- lower back and cervical spine pain,
- muscle stiffness,
- poor posture,
- fatigue and limited mobility.
When should you seek expert help?
In general, about 10,000 steps per day are recommended. With sedentary office work, however, many people do not even get close to that level.
If lack of movement is accompanied by:
- recurrent back pain,
- neck stiffness,
- tingling in the limbs,
- worsening difficulties,
it is advisable not to delay an examination at the Physiatry and Rehabilitation Clinic.
Physiatry and rehabilitation specialists at Polyclinic Púpava
Our specialists focus on comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of musculoskeletal conditions. They deal with both acute and chronic pain, conditions after injuries or surgery, and support for regeneration of the musculoskeletal system.
We use the most modern device-based therapies in treatment
- electrotherapy,
- robotic laser therapy,
- hilterapia,
- magnetic robotic system therapy,
- shockwave therapy,
- magnetotherapy,
- gas injections.
Gas injections (carboxytherapy) – a special method
Carboxytherapy is a method in which medical carbon dioxide (CO₂) is applied into the subcutaneous tissue. It subsequently supports blood circulation, improves tissue oxygenation, and may contribute to pain relief.
It is mainly used for
- spinal and joint pain,
- muscle spasms,
- certain neurological difficulties,
- circulatory disorders in the limbs.
Sedentary work does not have to be a problem in itself if it is balanced with regular movement. The foundation of prevention is regular physical activity and simple exercise during the day, short breaks from sitting, a walk, or light stretching exercises. If the difficulties recur or persist, an expert examination is appropriate. At the Physiatry and Rehabilitation Clinic at Polyclinic Púpava we can recommend individual rehabilitation exercises and set up therapy precisely according to your needs.
